Documentary : Earthlings

Do you eat meat products? Wear leather shoes and use leather bags? Go to zoos and circuses? Or do you own a pet? If you do, please watch this documentary.

This documentary is about the maltreatment of animals by humans. How an earthling treat  a fellow earthling. Directly or otherwise, as end-product users  and consumers of animal products we are partly responsible for the maltreatment and suffering of these animals. Our high demands for  animal products would further promote this kind of treatment on animals. Animal use on research and medicine are beneficial to humans but animals are sacrificed and they pay the high price for us. Watching this documentary may make us think that it is high time that we, humans, give the animals a better treatment and the respect they deserve as fellow earthlings.

About the documentary :
Source: Earthlings.com

EARTHLINGS is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, EARTHLINGS is nicknamed “the Vegan maker” for its sensitive footage shot at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs.

The film is narrated by Academy Award® nominee Joaquin Phoenix and features music by platinum-selling recording artist Moby. Initially ignored by distributors, today EARTHLINGS is considered the definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world. “Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people talking the most,” said Phoenix. “For every one person who sees EARTHLINGS, they will tell three.”

In 1999, writer/producer/director Shaun Monson began work on a series of PSAs about spaying and neutering pets. The footage he shot at animal shelters around Los Angeles affected him so profoundly that the project soon evolved into EARTHLINGS. The film would take another six years to complete because of the difficulty in obtaining footage within these profitable industries. Though the film was initially ignored by distributors, who told Monson that the film would “never see the light of day and should be swept under the rug,” today EARTHLINGS is considered the definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world.

Nation Earth was established to produce documentary films on socially urgent issues. EARTHLINGS, released in 2005, was the company’s first feature film and is the first of a documentary trilogy. The company is currently at work on the second installment, UNITY, which will explore the unifying force of consciousness found in nature, animals and humankind. UNITY is scheduled to be completed in 2010. For more information please see www.unitythemovement.com.

In 2005, Earthlings premiered at the Artivist Film Festival, (where it won Best Documentary Feature), followed by the Boston International Film Festival, (where it won the Best Content Award), and at the San Diego Film Festival, (where it won Best Documentary Film, as well as the Humanitarian Award to Joaquin Phoenix for his work on the film).

Trivia : The Guy Fawkes Mask - A Symbol of Protest

The first time I saw this mask I thought it was the one worn by the subterranean guy in the "Phantom of the Opera". I found out I was wrong so I decided to check what and who this mask is. Here's what I found out :

Guy Fawkes Mask
It's called the Guy Fawkes mask. Lately, it is commonly seen worn by protestors and used by the internet hackers group Anonymous as their official icon. But behind this mask is a long and interesting history that dates back to 17th century.

Who is Guy Fawkes? And what had he done to become famous, rather infamous, and be perpetually remembered in a mask.

A group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby plotted to blow up the House of the Lords to assassinate King James I of England to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plot was discovered and one of the plotters caught, convicted and eventually hanged was Guy or  Guido Fawkes. Guy Fawkes is a military man who was in-charge of  the gunpowder barrels to be used in the plot.

The Bonfire Night :
"Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in England since 5 November 1605. His effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by a firework display"[1]. This commemoration is known as the Bonfire Night[2] or Guy Fawkes Night.

V for Vendetta : A comic book series and a film adaptation where the main character was dressed in Guy Fawkes  mask made the mask more popular in recent times.

The Guy Fawkes mask has been used by protestors as a way to hide their identities and avoid retaliations. The mask eventually became a symbol of protests. It has also become a popular symbol in internet protest and is the icon of the hacker group called Anonymous.

Information : House Resolution No. 2828 States that All RESPs be AIPO Member

To All PRC-Licensed Real Estate Service Practitioners :

For the past several months, due to lack of information dissemination, incorrect information from some quarters and plain ignorance of the law, many licensed real estate practitioners have not joined the AIPO : PhilRES (Philippine Institute of Real Estate Service Practitioners Inc.)  as mandated by Republic Act No. 9646.

As per the By-laws of PhilRES, licensed real estate service practitioners are required to be members of this organization for them to be able to get their AIPO number which is one of the  basic requirements of the Professional Regulation Commission in renewing their licenses.

Unfortunately, today October 19, 2012 is the deadline for membership in PhliRES to be included in this year's roster of  "members of good standing" to be forwarded to PRC.

In connection to the above AIPO membership requirement, House Resolution No. 2828 [dated September 28, 2012] from the The House of Representatives Committee on Civil Service and Professional Regulation, is circulated today by PhilRES-Quezon City Chapter President : Mr. Rico Sevilla in his personal FB page to clear-up confusions that may give rise to unnecessary violation of RA9646 by some misled and misinformed practitioners.

The House Resolution  specifically states :

"The membership in the AIPO of a real estate service practitioner duly registered with the Board arises by operation of law, leaving the practitioner no discretion whatsoever not to be a member thereof."

Fellow real estate service practitioners I think this is loud and clear! Join the PhilRES-AIPO "now"! Go to the nearest BDO branch today, you only have a few hours to pay your membership dues. I repeat : "TODAY IS THE DEADLINE."

Trivia : Pomegranate - The Real Forbidden Fruit of the Garden of Eden?

A pomegranate tree laden with fruits

History and facts about the Pomegranate fruit : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate

Some Jewish scholars believe that the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden was the pomegranate. Maybe it's true because the pomegranate fruit tastes heavenly, and that must be the reason why Adam and Eve were tempted to eat the fruit. If you haven't tasted a pomegranate try one now!

When I was working abroad, my boss went on a business trip to Azerbaijan? or Armenia? not so sure now which of these two countries. When he came back from his trip he brought with him some fruits : pears, grapes and pomegranates which are native to the region. I ate one pomegranate fruit and it has  plenty of seeds. After eating, I put the seeds in a paper napkin to throw them in a garbage bin but there wasn't  any available around, so I put the seeds inside one of the pockets of my laptop bag and forgot all about it.

When I was already permanently back in Manila, I was checking for some important things in the small pockets of my laptop bag and guess what I found? Small brown seeds. The seeds were too dried and shrunken, small and hard, they looked like small stones bigger than sesame seeds. For a while,  I can't figure out what they were, until I suddenly remembered what I had put in that pocket almost a year before. There were about 30 seeds. I was about to throw them away but decided to just put them in one of the ceramic plant pots in our backyard. I doubted if they would grow, thinking they were too dried to even sprout. I was just curious to see how a pomegranate plant would look, in case  the seeds grow. After a few weeks, I checked the pot and saw some small sprouts not unlike alfalfa sprouts, really small. There were three small sprouts  and I thought maybe they were just grasses, so I just let them grow. Months passed and they had turned into small shrubs with small leaves. I googled pomegranate in my laptop and confirmed that those plants in the pot were indeed pomegranate plants with the same leaves as the ones that I saw in the webpages. Out of the many seeds I put in the pot, only three grew.

Now these pomegranate trees are almost four-foot high and growing healthy. The seeds that I planted came from a very good and sweet variety of a pomegranate similar to the picture of the fruit above. I do not know if  when they would bear fruit or  if they would even bear fruit in a tropical country. They say that pomegranate tree can adjust to climates and they grow in the drier areas of South East Asia and the Caribbean, which are tropical areas.

I hope they would bear fruits someday and if the Jewish scholars' belief is really true, then I would have the real forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden in my backyard.

People : Abed Shaheen - Fighting Racism With Social Media

A recent incident at the Beirut Hariri International Airport shows the importance and power of  internet and social media in fighting abuses. Here is the story of Mr. Abed Shaheen, a Lebanese national on how he used the social media to pursue an issue of racism among the employees of Middle East Airline, the national carrier of Lebanon. The incident has also caused a moral issue among the Lebanese people.

Lebanese Abed Shaheen - anti-racism crusader
#Racism at #Beirut Airport ! my personal hands-on experience.

Yesterday on the 6th of October I was at gate 11 with a friend of mine waiting to board the Air Arabia flight at 20:25.

While waiting to board there was a group of foreign workers sitting with the rest of the passengers waiting for their turn. They were behaving normally as any other group of passengers would.

Then sadly, the lady (looking at her uniform she apparently works for MEA Ground Services and not Air Arabia) at the gate announced on loud speaker (over the whole system covering the airport) the following: “Filipino people stop talking” ; then she started giggling about it with the macho gentleman who was with her at the gate.

They continued their racist behavior by announcing again “Filipino Nepal people talking not allowed here” and on and on.

Shocked, I obviously became furious and approached them and explained that this racist and discriminatory behavior is not acceptable, impolite and does not at the least reflect what employees at Beirut Airport should stand for (not to imply it’s acceptance in any other situation of course).

This unfortunately sounded like a joke to them and they went on to say “we do whatever we want and we don’t care about what you are saying”, then “management doesn’t even want this kind of people on the flight” and “even if you complain this will be thrown away and we dare you to do anything about it”.

When I asked her “how would you feel if you ever wanted to travel to Europe and while queuing for your visa they told you the same thing?”, she replied “these people are different”; The macho gentleman seeing that his female friend, whom he was trying so hard to impress with his imitating giggles, was cornered with her twisted racist logic even went further to ask me to back off the counter and threatening to make a problem and to void my ticket!! When I asked for the complaint form they answered (While still laughing of course) “take it from the flight attendants and good luck sitting next to such people on the flight”

I did file an official complaint with Air Arabia and their staff was very helpful and promised to reach the message out to their management.

However Air Arabia is paying MEAG for such services and they need to use their power to do greater efforts too to ensure that the people behind this are held accountable. I also sent an email today to Mr. Richard Mujais from MEAG, explaining what happened and asked him to further discuss this with me and to show us that these employees were held accountable for such racist behavior.

Until then, and as a friend suggested that they also need to be exposed please help me exposing such intolerable behavior…

Abed Shaheen
Source : http://www.twitlonger.com/show/jifguk

Filipinos are grateful to this kind-hearted gentleman for defending our overseas workers from the discrimination and racial slur they were treated with, but it was just incidental that Filipino and Nepali nationals were involved in the incident. I think Mr. Shaheen would have done the same if other nationalities were involved. But Mr. Shaheen did so because he was extremely shocked and furious on what a fellow Lebanese did : broadcasting her bigotry and racism in a public paging system, at an international airport at that, with probably hundreds of foreign nationals listening. He personally pursued the issue on the racist and discriminatory behavior   of the Lebanese national airline (MEA) employees thru the social media.

Blogging and tweeting his story, it created an uproar and a backlash against the national airline, prompting the airline company to make a public apology and fire one of its employees. This has also brought a moral issue among the Lebanese people, some even admitting that racism and discrimination are quite prevalent in the Lebanese society and these need to be eliminated.

Two thumbs up for Mr. Abed Shaheen!  A modern day hero and anti-racism crusader! May his tribe increase!

Information : A Seminar on Geohazards

Definition:
geohazard - can be defined as a geological state that represents or has the potential to develop further into a situation leading to damage or uncontrolled risk.

Some of the posts in this blog are about the disasters and calamities caused by geohazards.
In fact one of the most read post is the Metro Manila Geohazard Maps : http://theprojectreview.blogspot.com/2011/10/metro-manila-geohazard-map.html. This post has maps showing the exact location and extent of major and minor fault lines in the cities of Metro Manila. The readers' interest on this post shows their concern with fault lines and earthquakes, which are two of the geohazards we have in the country.

Unfortunately, our country abounds with geohazards. But we must learn to live with them and to reduce the risk posed by them. Most of these geohazards are natural phenomena, but some are induced  or aggravated by humans (e.g. floods and landslides) due to abuse and negligence in protecting our environment and natural resources.

For those interested of learning more of about geohazards : earthquakes, fault lines, landslides, floods, volcanic hazards, etc., here is one seminar that you might want to attend. This type of seminar is rarely offered  and this your opportunity to attend and learn from the experts. Please check poster below for details of the seminar :

Update : Supreme Court Stops Cybercrime Law Implementation

Filipino Netizens particularly the petitioners for the amendment and repeal of R.A.10175 must be celebrating now over the decision of the Supreme Court to issue a TRO on the implementation of Cybercrime Law. There's light at the end of the tunnel after all for us wishing a free and an unshackled internet in this country.

This TRO is a good omen of things to come from the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. Despite President Pnoy's  position of being pro the Cybercrime Law, the Supreme Court decided otherwise (although it's just a TRO), and unanimously at that.

Two Thumbs Up for the  SC Justices' unanimous decision!

Issues : Sen. TG Guingona III Talks About Cyber Freedom

Among the honorable senators of this country, this senator is a cut above the rest. The only senator who didn't vote for the  passage of the Cybercrime Law. With the ongoing Cybercrime Law brouhaha, he is the only one talking with sense and objectivity on the issue.

Laws : How the Cybercrime Law has Come to Pass!

If you want to know what really happened in the making of Republic Act No.10175  or the Cybercrime
Prevention Act of 2012 please read this very comprehensive article of Ms. Raissa Robles @ raissarobles.com .

Know who among the honorable Congressmen and Senators voted, did not vote, inserted, modified, read, did not read, overlooked, were absent, etc.

Judge for yourself who were the culprits in the making of the flawed Cybercrime Law? And mind you, this is also a good review material on whom to vote in  the forthcoming election.

This is a good non-fiction read.

Trends : Will the Philippines be the Next Internet's Black Hole?

Please click map to enlarge
Will the Philippines be included in this map soon or not?

The Cybercrime Law is turning into a Cybercrime Scandal, Cybercrime Fiasco or Cybercrime-gate  (call it what you want!) and this is just the beginning. With the way events are unfolding, it looks like it's going to be a big tsunami for the Aquino administration if it does not handle this situation carefully and wisely.

The controversial law has started to gain worldwide notoriety. And the whole wide world (www) and the world wide web (www) Netizens want to know what's going to happen next. Partly, Netizens worldwide are watching us because of the residual fame we got from the"People's Power" (i.e. nonviolent democratic protests) and for being one of the most active Netizens in this side of the globe. But mainly, they are watching to support us in another struggle for freedom, and luckily this time they are joining us as fellow Netizens of the WWW republic. Because whatever would be the outcome of this "Cybercrime-gate" could become a precedent  to other Netizens in other parts of the world.

From having one of the freest internet in the world, the Philippines might soon be listed as one of the "Internet's Black Holes"[1] in the world. Filipino Netizens, let us never make this happen. Let's all unite for a free internet!

[1] They represent the 15 countries that limit or prohibit their citizens’ access to internet as a way of censoring the free flow of information.

People : Bongbong vis-a-vis Noynoy

The news or press release below on Senator Bongbong Marcos shows his position and opinion in regard to the unconstitutional provisions of the Cybercrime Law,  particularly on the libel clause and the issue on freedom of expression. The senator says that the libel clause needs to be amended and categorically states that the bill he signed does not include the libel clause. He also favors a free internet and free speech, and says that "it is a fatal mistake to muzzle our voices in this medium". This statement from the good senator has definitely earned him some "pogi points" among the netizens of this country.

This is quite a contrast to the statement of MalacaƱang Palace :
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said that the Aquino administration stands by the law, insisting that there are “responsibilities in cyberspace.” From this statement, we can deduce that President Noynoy is endorsing the Cybercrime Law "hook, line and sinker" despite all the protests and complaints that some provisions are unconstitutional, and threaten free speech. President Noynoy's  position is rather disturbing considering the fact that his parents are the democratic icons of this country.

Reversal of positions?
