Information : Philippines is Now ASEAN's Economic Leader

From being the economic basket case of the ASEAN region, the Philippines has made a 180 degrees turn in its economic recovery. For the past years, the Philippine economic status has been continuously upgraded by international economic analysts, and just recently has been upgraded to "investment grade".

According to a report by the the Standard and Poor's (S & P), an American financial  researcher and analyst, the country is now ASEAN's undisputed economic leader.

“The Philippines, which Standard & Poor's recently upgraded to investment grade, has taken over the Asean growth leadership role from Indonesia,” S&P Asia Pacific chief economist Paul Gruenwald said in a new report released Monday.

MANILA - The Philippines is now Asean's undisputed economic leader, according to Standard & Poor's (S&P).

“The Philippines, which Standard & Poor's recently upgraded to investment grade, has taken over the Asean growth leadership role from Indonesia,” S&P Asia Pacific chief economist Paul Gruenwald said in a new report released Monday.

Gruenwald said the Philippine economy would grow by 6.9 percent this year, faster than other Asean economies.

According to its forecast, S&P sees Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) growing 6.1 percent; Vietnam, 5.3 percent; and Malaysia, 5.3 percent.  The Philippine growth forecast is higher than that for China at 7.3 percent.

A measure of economic performance, GDP is the amount of final goods and services produced in a country.

S&P's forecast for the Philippines' GDP growth this year is at the higher end of the government's target range of 6-7 percent.

The credit rating firm said growth however would slow to 6.1 percent next year before picking up to 6.5 percent in 2015.

Philippine GDP grew 7.8 percent in the first quarter of the year, making it the fastest-growing is Asia.

 “The major Asean economies we cover -- Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam -- continue to outperform. These economies are more domestically focused than the newly industrialized economies and therefore tend to do better when global growth is sluggish,” Gruenwald said.

For the entire Asean, S&P expects growth of 5.5 percent through 2015.

In making its forecast, S&P expects a rebound in the US economy later this year and in 2014. The Asean forecsat however remains below trend because of flat growth in Europe, which is Asia's biggest trading partner.

Overall, risks to Asia-Pacific growth remain skewed to the downside, S&P said, adding that a slowdown in China will have a ripple effect on Australia, which is the largest supplier of iron, and other economies that export heavily to China.

Two important risk factors are the pace of Chinese investment and real GDP growth, and the strength of the US economic recovery, S&P said.

Afterthought :
With the continuous improvement of the Philippine economy, many Filipinos are hoping that these improvements on the economy would soon also affect and bring about positive changes on the lives of the ordinary citizens of the country. Only then would the majority of Filipinos can restore their confidence in their government which has long neglected them.

Palawan is the best!

Places and Travel : Philippine Direct Flights to Brazil - No Visa Required for Filipinos

Good news for Filipino travelers, there will soon be direct flights between Brazil and the Philippines. And there will be no hassles of applying for a Brazilian visa, because Filipinos are not required visa to enter Brazil. Filipinos planning to visit Brazil will now spend lesser airfare and will have shorter travel time, this also means that more Pinoys would have a chance to go and watch the FIFAWorld Cup on 2014, and join the grandest festival on earth : the Rio Carnival.

Besides being a  beautiful country, what makes Brazil a good place to visit are the Brazilian people. I heard they are one of the the nicest people on earth, in fact, a survey conducted ranked the Brazilians as the "least rude people on earth". A beautiful country with great and interesting culture, and nice people at that, Brazil is indeed a perfect place go and visit.

Interesting Events : The Sabah Standoff - Malaysia's Big Dilemma

Malaysia is in a big dilemma on the Sabah standoff. The ongoing standoff  was due to the "illegal" occupation of  a "kampong" in Lahad Datu in Sabah by the heirs, followers and "royal army" of the Sultanate of Sulu. The group is invoking their legal and hereditary rights  to permanently stay in Sabah and they also submitted some demands to the Malaysian authorities. This incident is related to the heirs' long-standing Sabah claim, and this particular incident  is one that the Malaysians can not ignore or hide. If previous claims on Sabah  before were initiated by the Philippine government, the claim is now initiated by the actual heirs of the Sultanate of Sulu, the lessor and the acknowledged owners of  Sabah.

Here are some possible scenarios for Malaysia if it doesn't exercise prudence on this standoff. Malaysia can accept the demands of the heirs of the Sultanate of Sulu but this could mean acknowledging the right of ownership of  the Sultanate to Sabah, thereby strengthening the Philippine claim. With this scenario, a possible ceding or partition of Sabah is not far-fetched.

It can also reject the demands of the heirs but this could start an insurgency in Sabah. The heirs and followers of the Sultanate of Sulu have a sizable number of supporters within Sabah which they could mobilize. These followers and supporters of the Sultanate have been long time residents of Sabah and many of them were actually born in Sabah, and practically considered ethnic Sabahans. Most of them also possess Malaysian citizenship. Malaysia wouldn't want these scenarios to happen.

An immediate solution to quell this "occupation" of Sabah is forced dispersal and eventual deportation of the Sultanate's "subjects", but this move could turn violent and cause bloodshed. Some of the Sultanate's followers are reportedly armed. This would attract more attention and the international media would surely scrutinize the Sabah ownership issue. It definitely wouldn't want this to happen.

A worse scenario would be the involvement of the separatist groups excluded in the recent Mindanao peace process and creation of Bangsamoro autonomous region.(Incidentally, the Mindanao peace process was brokered by Malaysia) These groups might shift their "separatist cause" and tie-up with Sultanate's cause of reclaiming Sabah. If they could not get Mindanao, they might as well help get Sabah. An interesting fact about the  Mindanao conflict is that it had its roots from the Sabah claim. So basically, this two issues are intertwined. The MNLF already publicly acknowledged that  it supports the "incursion" of the Sultanate's followers in Sabah. Reports say that some of the followers who are now in Lahad Datu are actually members of the MNLF. This last scenario would be unthinkable. The Malaysian and Philippine governments wouldn't want this to happen at all cost.

The previous claims of the Philippines on Sabah had been ignored by the Malaysian government despite legal and historical proofs that the territory belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu. The most tangible proofs of ownership are the continuing annual rental payment of the Malaysian government to the heirs of the Sultanate of Sulu; and a legal decision made by the High Court of North Borneo acknowledging that (part of) Sabah belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu. Furthermore, the lease agreement entered into by the Sultanate of Sulu and the British North Borneo company specifically stated that : the lease prohibits the transfer of Sabah to any nation, company or individual without the consent of His Majesty’s Government (“Sultanate of Sulu”).

The Sabah standoff has put Malaysia in a dilemma, and Malaysia has to exercise prudence in its decision and action regarding the ongoing standoff. Everyone, Malaysians and Filipinos, wants it to end peacefully.

Let's all hope that Malaysia will do what is fair and just. And maybe, just maybe, it could give some concession to its lessor's demands.

People : Manny Pacquiao - The Filipino Icon

Manny Pacquiao the Filipino Boxing Icon

Today is a sad day for the Filipinos and his boxing fans around the world  after watching Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao getting knocked out by Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth and latest fight. Although he lost the fight and KO'd, there was nothing embarrassing in his loss. As a matter of fact he was very much ahead in points  and in control of the fight during the round, but unfortunately KO'd on the closing second of the round. His reputation or popularity will not be diminished by this loss.

Despite the loss, Filipinos and fans are happy that nothing seemed serious happened to him after the KO. (Hopefully, the same finding will come out after his post bout hospital examination).

Manny Pacquiao is still at his peak as a boxer but after what happened today, he should seriously consider retiring from the ring. What happened today showed his vulnerability as a boxer; and a reminder of his mortality as an ordinary mortal. He was lucky not to be hurt this time. The blow he received could have been fatal had it landed on a more sensitive part of his body. Ironically, the first ever KO of his career could be his wake-up call.

He has done all in boxing, with eight title belts to boast. But four encounter with the same boxer is just too much to be called a sports anymore. He must realize that it is just plain business and entertainment now. Time to quit.

Achievement-wise, he has nothing to prove anymore. He has achieved what any athlete in the world wanted to achieve. He is one of the greatest and most popular  sportsman of all time, and one of the riches at that. His name and status in boxing is on a par with the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali.

For Filipinos, he is not just a boxing icon but a national icon. He has made the Filipinos proud and has given his country honors many times over than any other Filipino.

The Filipinos will always be proud of you Manny Pacquiao!

Trivia : The Philippines - Most Emotional Country in the World

Filipinos the most emotional? I always thought the Italians are the most emotional people in the world. I had a chance of working with Italians for quite awhile and mind you the workplace was full of  drama. The scenes that you see in "The Godfather" movies are normal ( except for the killing of course ) everyday scenes with Italians around. They laugh, curse, talk, show affection in the full spectrum of emotions, couple that with their thick Italian accent, it's an opera.

But despite their being emotional and prone to sudden burst of temper, the Italians are one of the nicest nationalities I had worked with.

Let me go back to the original topic : Filipinos the world's most emotional people?
There was one incident where a  fellow Filipino engineer and our Italian supervisor fought in the company where I used to work. They had a fist fight and if it were not for the intervention of cooler heads either one of them might have had ended up in the hospital. There was a lot of cursing and emotions while two engineers settled their differences.The Filipino engineer was more intense, and emotional in proving his point. In the end, our Italian supervisor ended up apologizing to the Filipino engineer.

If a Filipino can "out emote" an Italian, then I guess the survey is right, we are the most emotional. I hope that also translates to a higher EQ (emotional quotient) and not being emotionally challenged.

But the survey is not just about one end of the emotional spectrum, it encompasses the whole bandwidth of emotion: happy, sad and other emotions in between. To quote the article : "Filipinos were the most likely to admit feeling both positive and negative emotions"

I guess there is also some positive note to the survey when the article mentions :
Bloomberg Businessweek quotes Gallup’s Jon Clifton as saying: “If you measure Singapore by the traditional indicators, they look like one of the best-run countries in the world. But if you look at everything that makes life worth living, they’re not doing so well.”

According to an article by 247wallst.com, ten countries top the list  of countries with the highest number of Facebook users.

Here's the list of the top 10:

Economy : The Philippines on the Upswing

The Philippines is really an enigma! There was a time when the economies of its neighboring countries were all doing well and the Philippines was bungling with its own. It was even tagged as the basket case of Asia. But now that other countries' economies are slowing down or collapsing, its economy is surprisingly on the upswing. As a matter of fact, it is now the fastest growing economy in Asia.

According to a CNN report, the growth is mainly due to two factors : the remittances of Overseas Filipino Workers and the booming call center industry. Normally, these factors are not what other countries would rely on to grow their economies, in fact it doesn't apply to most of them. Very few countries have big overseas workers population, and most do not have a call center industry. The only country which has a similar experience is India. India has a lot of overseas workers and also has a  booming call center industry. As a matter of fact,  it was the leading call center network in Asia until recently. Lately, the Philippines has overtaken India as the leading call center network in the region. But India is an industrialized country, unlike the Philippines which is basically an agricultural country.

Who would ever think that the facility of Filipinos to speak English as a second language would  someday be useful and eventually help in the economic recovery of their country. When Spain sold the Philippines to the Americans, the Philippines became a colony of the US for almost a century, and Filipinos were forced to learn the English language.

The Philippine Call Center Industry

And who would over think that Filipinos seeking employment and greener pastures abroad due to unemployment and lack of better job opportunities,  would someday help save their country's economy. Almost a tenth of the Filipino population are working abroad, and these millions of overseas Filipino workers are now remitting billions of dollars to the Philippines, thus helping its economy grow.

Despite some negative news about the Philippines, there are also some good news that the country can brag about. One of them is the country's high grade on English Education.

According to the 2012 survey by London research and ratings firm Quacquarelli Symonds, three Philippine universities are among the world's 50 best in teaching English : University of the Phlippines, Ateneo de Manila Uniersity and De La Salle University.

Information : Climate Disaster-Prone Provinces/Regions in the Philippines

When I saw the map I remembered a movie entitled: The Year of Living Dangerously (Incidentally, the movie was shot here in the Philippines, starring Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver). But the movie was not about natural disasters but more on politics in Indonesia during Pres. Sukarno's regime. It was just the phrase "living dangerously" which triggered me to remember it. This map is about the comparative dangers of living in the different provinces in the country due to climate disasters. Some provinces are more prone to climate disasters while some provinces have not experience any disasters at all. What  about "The Years of Living Dangerously in the Philippines" for a disaster movie?

Getting back to the real topic, this is about the environmental disaster areas in the country, specifically climate-induced(?) disasters. After the the number of consecutive disasters we had in the country the previous years, it's prudent to know and learn how to avoid these disasters or minimize their effects in our lives and livelihood. Information : PPUR Now Officially One of the New 7Wonders of Nature

This news is one big reason for us Filipinos to celebrate. Now that  the Puerto Princesa Underground River is officially declared ( not provisional anymore ) as one of the New 7Wonders of Nature, Palawan and the Philippines will be permanently etched in the eco-tourism map of the world. I remember when I was in grade school when we were required by our teacher to memorize the 7 Wonders of the World and where they are located. When I am abroad I would always remember them and want to see them. I have seen the Great Wall when I worked in China, and  the Leaning Tower of Pisa when I went to Italy to visit a cousin.

I almost saw the ancient city of Petra. I had an assigment in Amman, Jordan and had to travel by car from Amman to the port city of Aqaba on the Red Sea ( where you can see Israel from a distance). We passed by the town where Petra is located and my Jordanian-Palestinian co-worker told me that the ancient city is just near the place where we were driving. I told him that we just go there to see it when we travel back to Amman. Unfortunately due to our  hectic work schedule we had to travel back very late at night and my chance to see the Petra was never realized. I really regretted that.

Now that we have one of the  New 7 Wonders of  Nature right in our country, we Filipinos should never miss the opportunity  to see it. Let's all be proud of it but first we must see it. Let's go!

Interesting Places : The Spratly Islands

Spratly Islands is a group of islands near Palawan being claimed by the following countries : China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines. The group of islands in the middle of the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) is  a very rich fishing ground and is believed to contain big gas and oil deposits. As a matter of fact, one of the oil wells in Palawan lies near the area, which gives credence to this  speculation. Some of the countries are claiming the whole archipelago while some are claiming only parts or some islands. I did some research which part  or islands of Spratly is being claimed by the claimant countries and here is what I found :

Here is one interesting story related to the Philippine claim of  the Spratly Islands:
In 1947, Tomas Cloma, a Filipino adventurer and a fishing magnate, discovered a group of several uninhabited and unoccupiedislands/islets in the vastness of the Luzon Sea also called the South China Sea.On May 11, 1956, together with 40 men, Tomas Cloma and his brother Filemon took formal possession of the islands, lying some 380 miles west of the southern end of Palawan and named it “Free Territory of Freedomland." Four days later on May 15, 1956, Cloma issued and posted copies of his “Notice to the Whole World” on each of the islands as a decisive manifestation of unwavering claim over the territory.

Then on May 31, 1956, Tomas Cloma declared the establishment of the Free Territory of Freedomland, ten days after he sent his second representation to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

On July 6, 1956, Cloma declared to the whole world his claim and the establishment of a separate government for the "Free Territory of Freedomland" with its capital on Flat Island (Patag Island). His declaration was met with violent and unfriendly reactions from several neighboring countries especially the Republic of China (ROC; on Taiwan since 1949) when on September 24, 1956 it effectively garrisoned the nearby island of Itu Aba and intercepted Cloma’s men and vessels found within its immediate waters. Unable to surmount the difficulties and pressure, he ceded his claim to the Philippines for one peso.
