Places and Events : Flash Flood of Sendong is Worse than Ondoy

The flash flood triggered by Sendong is worse than that of Ondoy because it happened in total darkness. The flash flood happened  between 2 am to 5 am when everybody was asleep. Most didn't have a chance to get up from bed when the water came rushing. Even those that were able to get out of their beds and houses didn't have a chance to go to safety. You can just imagine wading out in muddy water in total darkness not knowing which direction to go. From my experience during Ondoy, you have to go up to to a higher  ground or climb a tree in ten to fifteen minutes( or even less)or you will drown. That is how fast the water rises during a flash flood. But how do you that in total darkness?

Places and Events : Flash Flood in Mindanao.

Today the biggest news that  hit the headline is the flash flood triggered by tropical storm Sendong in  Mindanao, particularly Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City and Zamboanga del Norte.  With over a hundred deaths already, I am quite concerned because I have some relatives in Cagayan de Oro City which is one of the hard-hit areas.  Sometimes, we become accustomed  to news about typhoons  and floods  that sometimes we treat this news with apathy as if they are "just regular news". I myself was guilty of this attitude. But after experiencing the flash flood in Marikina during Ondoy more than two years ago, it's now different story for me. I emphatize with these flash flood victims because I had the same experience. When I see the news on TV,  I sort of "relive" that experience again. Running for your life (with your family)  to go up the roof  in murky and muddy water is quite a traumatic and fearsome experience, specially if the flood water is already chest-deep and still you can not open the door of your house because the water level and pressure is higher outside the door. And you always remember everytime you see the abandoned houses of former neighbors. I realized that the trauma and fear of the experience doesn't leave your psyche totally. It always comes back at times like this one in Mindanao. Let's just wish and pray for the safety of our fellow Filipinos in the South. And if needed send some help.
