Environment : Rising Sea Level Submerging Island Nations

An article about some island nations was given minor importance and placement in a newspaper, but its subject matter was far from being minor or insignificant. The article was specifically about island nations submerging in to the sea because of the rising sea level. In the near future these island nations would cease to be nations and countries, because they would become landless and without any territories to call their own. Their island nations swallowed by the sea.

The article mentioned above is not fiction, it is a true story. In fact, some of these islands have started sinking into the sea.

Some countries are fighting over territories, others are talking about their economic development and exports, others are concerned with attracting tourists to visit their countries. Trivial concerns compared to the concern of these island nations worrying about how long would their countries exist as visible landmasses on the surface of the earth.

People from these islands nations are pleading for help because soon they would be drowning and would be totally annihilated as a people or nation. Some of these island nations have already made arrangements with other countries to repatriate their nationals to these host countries. For the past years, New Zealand has been accepting "climate refugees" from the island nation of Tuvalo in the Pacific, which is just about three feet above sea level and is expected to soon disappear under the sea.

Climate change or global warming are taken for granted by many people. Some people think these matters are not of immediate concern, just products of over imaginative minds, or just mere theories of paranoid scientists. But the fact is, we have been experiencing the effects of climate change and global warming for the past decades. And the effects have been getting worst through the years. Climate change and global warming are real phenomena that we can not ignore, and have to deal with them with urgency.

We Filipinos should be very much concerned with climate change and global warming. We have been experiencing its effects for the past several years with much destruction and loss of lives. Super typhoons, erratic weathers, extended periods of heavy of rains, drought and rising sea level are just some of the effects of these phenomena in our country. Our country, being a part of this so-called island nations, have the possibility of losing its smaller islands and low-lying coastlines. In fact, this is already happening in some parts of the country. A portion of a coastal barangay in the town of Aringay in La Union province had already submerged into the sea, partly because of soil erosion and the rising sea level.

Fortunately, we have bigger islands in our country to go to if our smaller islands go underwater, unlike these submerging island nations who have no other option but to flee to other countries.

It's time for  the nations of the world to get their acts together to fight, stop or minimize the effect of  climate change and global warming. Hopefully now, while we are still above the water.

Island nation of Nauru
With the rising sea level the picture above would soon be a common scenario
specially on so-called island nations or republics.

People : Elton John - The Musical Genius

Two weeks ago my sister requested me to drive her to a wedding. On our way to the church, she mentioned that she just had a luncheon/reunion with her college friends. One of her friends works at that big television network along Mother Ignacia St. in Quezon City. After their reunion her friend invited them to watch a concert because she had some tickets for that one-night concert of Elton John. That was when I remembered that I was supposed to buy a ticket and watch the same concert : Elton John - 40th Anniversary of the Rocket Man. Since I forgot to buy the ticket and had some job to do, I just shrugged my shoulders because I will be missing one of the best artists to come to Manila. Elton John is one of the best songwriters of the past four decades. His collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin has produced some of the best songs of all time. His fans span generations with varying preference of musical genre'.

Yesterday, while browsing a favorite blog : The Daily Spank, I saw a blog post about the concert of Elton John. After reading the post, I realized that I really missed a once-in-a-lifetime concert of a musical genius.

Here's Elton John singing one of his greatest hits :

Trivia : Today is the End of the World?

Some people are saying that based on the Mayan calendar today is the end of the world. The Mayans has a calendar system in which today : December 21, 2012, coincides with the end of the calendar's 13th bak'tun*. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5125-year-long cycle in their calendar. Cataclysmic events were predicted to happen on this date. Some people speculated and interpreted that the end of the calendar is also the end of the world. The movie 2012 and some new age cults were mainly responsible in popularizing the belief that today is the end of the world.

Enjoy this day everyone! Or shall we greet each other : "Happy End of the World Day?

*Note:
Below is the Mayan calendar system of counting days and periods :
The mayans kept time roughly in units of 20: 20 days made a uinal, 18 uinals (360 days) made a tun, 20 tuns made a k'atun, and 20 k'atuns (144,000 days or roughly 394 years) made up a b'ak'tun. Thus, the Mayan date of 8.3.2.10.15 represents 8 b'ak'tuns, 3 k'atuns, 2 tuns, 10 uinals and 15 days

Places : Cateel, Davao Oriental - Before and After Supertyphoon Pablo

The fury of supertyphoon Pablo has drastically changed the landscape of Davao Oriental. Here is a picture of Cateel River in Cateel, Davao Oriental before and after the supertyphoon Pablo. From a beautiful and picturesque river surrounded by thousands of coconut trees, it had turned into an empty and desolate landscape. It would take a few years before this place is restored to its previous state and glory.

History and Places : Malolos, Bulacan circa 1899

Have you ever wondered how places looked in the Philippines over a century ago? How did the houses and buildings looked? How did the people dressed up? Here is a picture of the inauguration of the First Philippine Republic in Malolos, Bulacan. Notice how formally dressed the Filipinos then during that very important date in Philippine history. And also see how stately the "bahay na bato"architectures were then. The grandeur of the past.

Information : 2012 MMDA Christmas Lanes

Today is the start of the use of the 2012 MMDA Christmas lanes or the alternate routes which the MMDA(Metro Manila Development Authority)  recommends the public to use to avoid traffic congestion along major roads and thoroughfares in the Metro during the Christmas season.

These lanes are not permanently assigned lanes and  change from year to year. Minor roads and unfamiliar streets are utilized as part of the Christmas lanes. In most locations they are to complement other major roads and streets to accommodate traffic. The streets utilized and assigned as Christmas  lanes depend on the traffic volume and other factors (infrastructures, etc) in areas in which they are implemented.

More importantly, these so-called Christmas lanes are planned to help Christmas shoppers, "mallers" and motorists to have faster movement going to (and vice-versa) major shopping center, malls and entertainment venues in the Metro.

Only in the Philippines! Metro Manila the "Christmas City" with its Christmas lanes.

Property Listings : The Listings Bank - The Brokers' Direct Listings Access

The most common problem  of real estate brokers with their marketing and brokerage transaction is not having a good listing of real estate projects and properties. Not just listings but direct listings at that. In order to get direct listings you have to get accredited with developers, network with fellow brokers and have direct contact and access with property owners. And having to do all these things mentioned is not an easy task and will take a lot of precious time. Having a "quality real estate portfolio" of projects and properties to offer to fellow brokers for brokerage and to sell directly to clients is a must for all real estate brokers.

People : Manny Pacquiao - The Filipino Icon

Manny Pacquiao the Filipino Boxing Icon
Today is a sad day for the Filipinos and his boxing fans around the world  after watching Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao getting knocked out by Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth and latest fight. Although he lost the fight and KO'd, there was nothing embarrassing in his loss. As a matter of fact he was very much ahead in points  and in control of the fight during the round, but unfortunately KO'd on the closing second of the round. His reputation or popularity will not be diminished by this loss.

Despite the loss, Filipinos and fans are happy that nothing seemed serious happened to him after the KO. (Hopefully, the same finding will come out after his post bout hospital examination).

Manny Pacquiao is still at his peak as a boxer but after what happened today, he should seriously consider retiring from the ring. What happened today showed his vulnerability as a boxer; and a reminder of his mortality as an ordinary mortal. He was lucky not to be hurt this time. The blow he received could have been fatal had it landed on a more sensitive part of his body. Ironically, the first ever KO of his career could be his wake-up call.

He has done all in boxing, with eight title belts to boast. But four encounter with the same boxer is just too much to be called a sports anymore. He must realize that it is just plain business and entertainment now. Time to quit.

Achievement-wise, he has nothing to prove anymore. He has achieved what any athlete in the world wanted to achieve. He is one of the greatest and most popular  sportsman of all time, and one of the riches at that. His name and status in boxing is on a par with the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali.

For Filipinos, he is not just a boxing icon but a national icon. He has made the Filipinos proud and has given his country honors many times over than any other Filipino.

The Filipinos will always be proud of you Manny Pacquiao!

Environment : An Afterthought After Supertyphoon Pablo

Everything was normal in Luzon, particularly in Metro Manila when "Supertyphoon Pablo" was ravaging Davao and other parts of Mindanao and Visayas. Most people were thinking :  this will not be another "Sendong", just another strong typhoon, and people down South are more prepared now and know what to do. But when everything has settled or seems to have settled days after the typhoon left, then comes these pictures below. We were all wrong. When Mother Nature unleashes its fury and revenge, nothing can stop it.

It's time to pause and think about what happened.

It's time to ask the question: Why?

Maybe it is because of climate change? global warming? deforestation? illegal logging? the victims not heeding the typhoon warnings? And maybe, yes, it's because of people wanting the RH Bill? So many questions but no answers.

Maybe it's time to realize that we are not in control.

Let's leave it at that for the moment.

Let's help the victims of Pablo.

Information : Supertyphoon Pablo's Path and Direction

Here is a map of the path of "Supertyphoon Pablo". Superimposed on the map are data coming from three meteorological agencies namely : Pagasa (Phil), Joint Typhoon Warning Center (US), and the Japanese Meteorological Agency. The data from these three meteorological agencies basically give the same path and direction, but some directional deviations occur  on the latter path of the typhoon.

Supertyphoon Pablo is a reminder of last year's Typhoon Sendong which brought about great devastation, flooding and a considerable number of deaths in different parts of Mindanao. The two typhoons have an almost identical paths and both occurring in the month of December. But the main difference of the two typhoons is : Typhoon Sendong was just an ordinary tropical storm with lots of rain while incoming Typhoon Pablo is a "supertyphoon" with very strong winds. We hope  and pray that Typhoon Pablo doesn't bring in much rain that would cause flooding and landslides.

Let's all prepare well this time, and apply the lessons we learned from Typhoon Sendong.
And let's help our neighbors and other people in case of emergency. Be safe everyone.
